Re: Proposed Boundary Change – Federal Electoral Boundaries

At the Open Session Council Meeting held on September 20, 2022 the Council of the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen considered the proposed changes to the federal electoral boundary affecting the Township and passed the following resolution:

Moved by Deputy Mayor Gerow

Seconded by Councillor Pomeroy

Whereas the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario has proposed that the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen be moved from the riding of Peterborough-Kawartha to the riding of Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga for the purposes of future federal elections; and

Whereas the boundary for the new riding will shift the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen out of Peterborough County;

Be It Resolved That the Council of the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is not prepared to support the federal electoral boundary change as proposed by The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario until more detailed information is provided explaining the reason for the proposed change; and further

That a representative from the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario is invited to attend a Council meeting and address all members of Council directly in order to explain the proposed changes to the electoral boundary for the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen.

Carried

Members of Council have expressed concern regarding the proposed change to the federal electoral boundary map that moves the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. For the purposes of federal electoral boundaries, the sphere of influence and activity for the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is proposed to be removed from the County of Peterborough. This is of great concern to members of Council. Council is inviting a member of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission to attend a Council meeting in order to answer all questions and fully explain the reason for the change in boundaries for the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen.

Sincerely,

Bob Angione, M.P.A., B.Admin.

Chief Administrative Officer and Municipal Clerk of the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen
