I strongly oppose the proposal to split Scarborough North into Scarborough Northwest and Scarborough-Rouge Park.

There are two main reasons for my opposition.

  • The proposal will split the community. I know the community well being the Co-Chair of the Yin Hua Association of Ontario with offices at 4168 Finch Avenue East in the community Milliken. The City of Toronto's website shows Neighbourhood Profiles with Milliken having a 78% East Asian population and a 97% Visible Minority population. This community should not be split as we have a strong voice as one united community as we have been for decades. Midland Avenue has always been the border of the riding and it should be kept that way to keep the community whole.
  • The proposal does not support strong representation for diverse communities. Yin Hua Association is an organization representing Chinese diaspora from India and we speak a Chinese dialect called Hakka. We are an immigrant minority and a linguistic minority. Our community has a strong voice within Scarborough North because hundreds of families live in this area and settled here in the 1990s when Chinese immigrant families moved to northern Scarborough. When half of these families are moved into Scarborough-Rouge Park, our strong voice is diluted and that is very unfair.

Therefore in conclusion, I suggest keeping Scarborough North and expanding its boundaries to add more population should that be necessary, however, splitting it into two areas is very destructive to our communities. Please reconsider your proposal.

Sincerely,

Charles Wang, Co-Chair
