I am writing in bemusement at the proposal to change the name of Parkdale - High Park. While I wholeheartedly support the acknowledgment of indigenous people on whose land we have built our present day community, I'm perplexed why the Commission came up with the name Taiaiako'n. I've lived here for 28 years and it does not resonate at all. Is it related to the Teiaigon village on the Humber? I predict pronouncing and spelling it will become a nightmare, not to mention being an administrative headache.

But mostly I wonder how the Commission ignored its stated intention: to maintain the historical connection of communities to the electoral districts, while ensuring that names are inclusive, meaningful, and connote a clear sense of location or geographical reference.

I would have thought that there are many better places to consider honouring indigenous people, for example where there are flourishing settlements with a significant established population. Parkdale doesn't seem to fit the bill - are you trying a bit too hard?

Sincerely, Kate Stacey
