I am writing regarding the proposal to change the name of Parkdale-High Park to Taiaiako'n-High Park from the viewpoint of a family that immigrated to Canada 40 years ago.

The name of our city is Toronto - already an indigenous-based name. I'm not sure why changing the name of our local ward to something that most people cannot read or spell makes any sense or helps towards reconciliation. The population in our area is of a highly mixed background of people, Polish, Maltese, Tibetan, and Ukrainian, Portuguese just to name a few. Many immigrants are struggling with learning English - so now throwing in an unpronounceable indigenous name will make a few people feel better? Shouldn't we be focused more on providing clean drinking water and protecting the land that the indigenous people still have be better than a token name change?

Ironically, many of the streets in our area and a local public school start with Indian: Indian Road Crescent P.S., Indian Grove, Indian Road, Indian Crescent. How can these offensive names not be changed when High Park-Parkdale - a simple, descriptive, and perfectly inoffensive title - be changed?

Respectfully,

Christine Costa
