Re: Support for the Federal Electoral Boundary Review as it Relates to Ajax
The following resolution was passed by Ajax Town Council at its meeting held on September 26, 2022:
Whereas under the Constitution of Canada, the federal electoral districts must be reviewed every 10-years following the census to reflect changes and movements in Canada's population;
And whereas the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission ("the Commission") for Ontario was allocated one additional district for the province (totaling 122 electoral districts) and found it necessary to propose many new electoral boundaries to correct wide variations in voter equality due to population changes;
And whereas because of population change, the Commission is proposing adding a sixth riding to the Eastern GTA and changing the boundaries to the existing five ridings, except for Ajax which remains unchanged. With the boundary changes to the Eastern GTA proposed electoral districts, the range of most populous to least populous riding varies by 7,799, ensuring fair representation by population;
And whereas by keeping the federal electoral district boundary in line with the Town of Ajax boundary the federal riding representative will be equipped to take a singular focus in speaking and acting on behalf of the people of Ajax;
Now therefore be it resolved that:
- Ajax Council support the Commission's decision to leave the Ajax federal electoral district unchanged; and
- A copy of this motion be sent to Commission Secretary Paula Puddy, and Ajax MP Mark Holland.
