It only came to my attention today that a proposal has been put forward by the Commission that the entire geographic area of Kingston East, in which we live, be incorporated into a federal riding that includes Gananoque, Prescott, and Brockville. I knew nothing of this proposal until this late date and strongly disagree with it. I am also confident that an overwhelming number of my neighbours feel the same.

My area, formerly Pittsbugh Township, was amalgamated with the City of Kingston in 1997. Prior to that, the area and its residents have always been naturally, socially, geographically and historically very closely associated with Kingston. Most of us shop there, meet our friends there, or go to school there daily. Since amalgamation, we are now completely integrated as a community.

This proposal has not been put before us in a timely manner to allow people to become acquainted with what has been proposed and to express our feelings.

Why has the Commission not contacted the community involved to canvass our opinion? This initiative does not fit well with democratic process. I urge that the deadline be extended and an effort made to publicize the proposal to the community of Kingston East before any action is taken.

Again, I strongly disagree with this proposal and I consent to having my full name and comments posted on the Electoral Boundary commission's website.

Respectfully,

Maureen Garvie
