The following is respectfully submitted in response to the proposed electoral redistribution of an area close to Kingston, north of highway 401.

The proposal to assign the citizens of said area to the electoral district of Brockville , Gananoque and Prescott appears illogical and counterintuitive for several reasons.

  1. The citizens living in that area pay taxes to the City of Kingston and not to Gananoque, Brockville or Prescott.
  2. They also share emergency services (fire and police) with Kingston, not Gananoque, Brockville or Prescott.
  3. The citizens of the area have social, cultural, medical, economic and educational activities based mainly in Kingston, not Gananoque , Brockville or Prescott.
  4. The average distance to the Kingston and the Islands MP's office is 10km while it is 90km to Brockville. The proximity of the constituency office in Kingston encourages participation in the democratic process and facilitates personal contacts between the MP and the electors.

Furthermore, an MP living in Gananoque, Brockville or Prescott will not be firmly rooted in the Kingston community nor fully appreciate or understand the region's distinctive characteristics and problems.

Hopefully, this current electoral district redistribution process will see the area north of the 401, close to Kingston, returned to the fold of the Kingston and the Islands Electoral District where it rightly belongs.
