I wanted to write regarding my concerns about removing sections of the Tyandaga and Brant Hills neighborhoods from the Burlington Lakeshore Federal riding to a new riding, Burlington — Milton West.

Tyandaga and Brant Hills should absolutely stay part of the Burlington Lakeshore Federal Riding and I am disappointed to hear that it would be included in Milton. Please see below for rationale:

  • The closest main intersection at the west edge of the city of Milton to Tyandaga and Brant Hills is Tremaine Road and Derry Rd — Which is a 23 minute or 21.3 KM drive from the neighborhoods, primarily through rural backgrounds. vs. the closet main intersection in Burlington is Brant Street and North Service Road (Central Burlington) — which is only 2-4 minute drive or 2 KM distance from Tyandaga and Brant Hills — How does this make sense that these neighbourhoods are grouped with Milton which is over 10X further away and a different city?
  • Tyandaga and Brant Hills Use Joseph Brant Hospital as their primary hospital — located in Downtown Burlington — which is 6-7 KM away from the neighborhoods, straight down Brant Street — no highways needed (MAX 10 minute drive). As a lifelong Tyandaga resident, I have never used Milton Hospital — which is a smaller hospital than Joseph Brant — and much farther — 27.5 KM Drive or 25 MIN drive on a toll Highway (407). If I called 911 and needed an ambulance, the ambulance would take me to Joseph Brant Hospital — not Milton. Joseph Brant is the main hospital for ER and OBGYN/Labour and Delivery Care for Tyandaga and Brant Hills.
  • The homes in Tyandaga and neighborhoods of Brant Hills fit more closely with Headon Forest, Millcroft, Downtown Burlington, etc. As established, mature neighborhoods. Most homes were built in the late 70's (if not earlier). Whereas West Milton — homes are still going up — most would be under 10 years old — new construction, growing, neighborhoods, with different needs i.e. infrastructure, community resources/centers, roads, schools, etc.
  • As a voter in Tyandaga and Brant Hills, our voting concerns would be a minority in terms of the larger population and different voter issues in Milton — which would result in less representation of our community at the federal level. It should be aligned with similar neighborhoods in Burlington — so our voice is heard — Millcroft, Headon Forest, Downtown Burlington, Mountainside, etc.

Thank you,

Heather Page Hills
