John Maloney

Please accept my submission concerning the proposed boundary changes in Niagara.

John Maloney

My name is John Maloney, a retired resident of Port Colborne and wish to provide a few comments on the Federal Electoral redistribution proposals.

I come from a political perspective garnered from:

1) my experience of fifteen years as a Federal Member of Parliament,

2) one 4-year term as Mayor of Port Colborne, and

3) one four year term as Member of council for the Regional Municipality of Niagara

It is difficult, if not impossible, to make everyone happy with a Riding redistribution. Considerations such as reasonable population parity; reasonable community of interest; along with regional and municipal boundaries should be considered. Often overlooked is the plight of the member to represent his or her respective citizens. How difficult is it to get around the riding geographically, what are the distances between urban and rural areas within the riding, what is the influence of adjusted ridings.

Applying some of these factors to the Niagara region may I suggest:

A. Niagara South

With the Highway 406 and 140 along with the Welland Canal running in a corridor through the communities of Port Colborne, Welland and Thorold and linking up with Fort Erie and the International trade routes with the U.S.

B. Niagara North

Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake with its tender fruit and international tourism and trade factors

C. Niagara West

With the mixed agriculture in Grimsby, Niagara West, Smithville, Wainfleet and Dunnville.

D. Niagara Centre

Strictly St. Catharines
