Mississauga—Streetsville Electoral Redistribution

Good evening commissioners,

I'm Rechie Valdez the Member of Parliament for Mississauga--Streetsville. Thank you for all the work that has gone into this proposal. Here are some important considerations that I feel represents the interests of this community.

For Mississauga—Streetsville and the redistribution proposed changes:

• By moving the southeast portion of the boundary north of Eglington and up to Main Street, the Streetsville community is being divided. I believe Streetsville is significant in terms of community identity, local significance, and history within the larger city of Mississauga. I believe that Streetsville should be left intact as it currently is.
  • The history and settlement story of Streetsville began in 1819
  • The proposed changes break up the Village of Streetsville:
    • At the centre of Streetsville, is Streetsville Village Square where the Cenotaph is located.
    • The square along with, Vic Johnson Community Centre, Streetsville Memorial Park, Streetsville Memorial Cemetery, Robinson Brae House which is a history home, Streetsville GO station and many local businesses will be divided and will fall into Mississauga Erin Mills.
• Of note, since the previous 2 redistributions at the federal level, the Streetsville community remained together
• At the local level, the village of Streetsville has always had 1 local councillor representing the community since 1974

Some additional comments I have are regarding the Name of the Riding

• The riding name “Mississauga—Streetsville” has existed since 2004
• Many residents have voiced their concerns: as the village of Streetsville is divided based on the proposed redistribution, and eliminating any mention of Streetsville as part of the riding name, would completely erase the significance of the Streetsville community and its rich history
• We suggest that the riding name could be “Mississauga—Streetsville North—Meadowvale”, “Mississauga—Meadowvale—Streetsville North”, “Mississauga—Streetsville—Meadowvale”, or “Mississauga—Meadowvale—Streetsville”
