Roger Haley, Warden for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville

Attached, please find correspondence from Roger Haley, Warden for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville with respect to proposed boundary changes to the Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes district.

United Counties of Leeds and Grenville

Dear Secretary Puddy:

At the September 7th Committee of the Whole meeting, members discussed information regarding proposed changes to our electoral district currently known as Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.

The Committee acknowledged proposed changes to boundaries in this geographic piece result from the goal of achieving population equality; however, it is the position of Members that these adjustments will upset communities of interest in our region. The current boundary mirrors that of Leeds and Grenville where numerous economic, social and historical codependences exist. Members shared concerns that changes would negatively impact these ties, confuse electors and potentially undo many years of relationship building between formerly independent municipalities.

On behalf of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, I respectfully request reconsideration to the proposed changes. The work of the Commission to create voter parity is not without challenges, and while we acknowledge and support its goals, I look forward to any opportunity to discuss other potential solutions.

Roger Hale,
Warden
