Re: Redistribution of Federal Electoral Districts 2022, Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes

Dear Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario

The Council for the Town of Prescott discussed the proposal of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario on the boundaries of our electoral district, Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. Council directed Staff to send a letter to convey their concerns and position on the current proposal.

The proposal would see portions of municipalities from differing counties being cobbled together to create a federal electoral district. The current boundary based on the geographical area of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville including the single tier municipalities, provides a logical grouping.

The municipalities in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville work together to address resident and business concerns which often requires conversations with and support from senior levels of government. By splitting up not just counties but portions of a single municipality into different electoral districts, it would result in an unmanageable working relationship between the three levels of government, of which municipalities work most closely with residents.

The Council of the Town of Prescott would request that consideration be given to the concerns highlighted in this letter to develop a new proposal that more closely aligns with current municipal and county boundaries.

Sincerely,
Matthew Armstrong
Chief Administrative Officer and Treasurer
Corporation of the Town of Prescott
