Here are my concerns:

  • The top 1/3 of Oakville [including me and my family) will now be in the new Georgetown - Mifton East riding. With such a big representation of Georgetown and Milton, the top 1/3 of Oakville residents will no longer be properly represented in this new proposed riding. The future MP of Georgetown - Milton East will be more interested in the concerns of Georgetown and Milton rather than the concerns of people in Oakville.
  • Several Oakville landmarks will now be in the Georgetown - Milton East riding, including:
    • Oakville Trafalgar Hospital
      • Shouldn't the Oakville hospital be in the Oakville riding. It will not get the same attention of a future MP as it would from a MP who represents Oakville.
  • Will provincial ridings in Ontario follow suit of this proposed federal redistribution?
    • If not, this will be very confusing. Several members of my community meet our MP and MPP regularly to discuss issues we care about. If the ridings are different between federal and provincial, this makes our constitutional right of meeting our representatives unnecessarily confusing. It is discouraging and the democratic process shouldn't be so discouraging.

Here are my proposed solutions:

  • Expand the proposed Oakville North riding northern border to the top of Oakville border (Hwy 407)
    • This is the top of the current Oakville North-Burlington riding
    • If the population needs to be distributed more evenly, then perhaps move the lower border of Oakville North further up. Instead of QEW, maybe move it up to upper Middle Road
  • If you can't expand the northern border of the Oakville North riding, then at least include Oakville in the name of the new riding so it shows that we're being represented, like: Georgetown • Milton East Oakville North
    • By including Oakville in the name, the new MP will be sure to keep the interests of Oakville residents in mind. And having the Oakville l'afalgar Hospital in this riding will make more sense.
  • Work with the provincial government to ensure that the ridings are same between federal and provincial
    • It will make it harder to exercise one's democratic right to speak to our representative if the federal and provincial ridings are different
    • If the provinces don't agree in this new redistribution, I don't think ifs a good idea to proceed. There needs to be harmony federally and provincially.

I would be happy to provide any more information or answer any questions you may have.
