Michael Stewart

Hello,

I am submitting feedback regarding the proposed electoral boundaries that are part of the upcoming redistribution. As a lifelong Halton Region resident, I appreciate the opportunity.

My concerns are about the boundaries of the future Halton ridings: Burlington Lakeshore, Burlington-Milton West, Georgetown-Milton East, Oakville Lakeshore, and Oakville North. The proposed map splits up municipalities, and significantly deviates from the historical boundaries of the current electoral districts, without that being necessary. For example:

  • The City of Burlington and Town of Oakville, which both have a population less than 200,000, will each be split between four different electoral districts, instead of just two per municipality.
  • The western boundaries of the new Oakville electoral districts are being expanded beyond the Oakville-Burlington border of Burloak Drive to Appleby Line in east Burlington, resulting in thousands of Burlington residents being misplaced in an Oakville electoral district.
  • The Town of Milton, which has a population more than 100,000, is being split between two electoral districts but will include several communities from neighbouring municipalities that are too distinctive from Milton.

To address the above concerns, I recommend the following amendments to the proposed electoral district names and maps:

  • Burlington Lakeshore: adjust the eastern boundary to Burloak Drive.
  • Halton: boundaries contain Georgetown/Halton Hills, the rural parts of Milton and Burlington, and the northernmost urban parts of the City of Burlington that may not fit within Burlington Lakeshore due to the growing population. This electoral district will completely surround the Milton electoral district.
  • Milton: boundaries contain only the urban parts in the Town of Milton and immediate surrounding area so the anticipated urban growth is included.
  • Oakville Lakeshore: adjust the western boundary to Burloak Drive.
  • Oakville North: adjust the western boundary to Burloak Drive and Tremaine Road, and adjust the northern boundary to Highway 407 to better reflect the Town of Oakville's municipal boundaries and include the anticipated urban growth.

Thank you for taking my thoughts and recommendations into consideration.
