I have been a resident in Mississauga—Streetsville all my life. Mississauga—Streetsville is a historic name that needs to be protected on a federal level. Mississauga—Streetsville is the name connected to the historic Village of Streetsville founded in 1819 by Timothy Street. This community is 200 years old and it has held significant events in Canadian history. The historic and beloved mayor, Hazel MacCallion was one of the first female mayors in Ontario and in Canada when she became the mayor of Streetsville and later longest serving mayor in Canada after 38 years in office retiring as mayor of Mississauga at 94 in 2014. Today Hazel is still an active member of the community at age 101. We should honour her years of public service by keeping this historic name. This ridding was home to many notable figures of national importance, such as the first Muslim man ever elected to the House of Commons, the first Filipina elected to the House of Commons and Mayor Bonnie Crombie of Mississauga. Why should we destroy this history. It would make no sense to change the name and rip the historic village of Streetsville to multiple ridings. We need to make sure that the area south of Thomas street stays in the ridding. Iconic buildings of cultural significance are located south of Thomas street and will become a part of Mississauga Erin Mills. The famous Franklin house, the Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church built in 201 years ago, the Streetsville United Church built in 1820, the 200–year–old Streetsville Memorial Cemetery, the Old Streetsville town hall, and vic johnston arena. Those important landmarks in local history will be taken away and put in a different ridding. This redistribution does not take into account local cultural heritage. We must protect the name and the historical village to make sure that our female, Muslim, and Filipino trailblazers are respected while prioritizing the makeup of our city. Thank you and please save Mississauga-Streetsville for all Canadians.
