Honourable Bardish Chagger

My name is Bardish Chagger, and I am the Member of Parliament for the Riding of Waterloo; a position I have held since 2015. I was born and raised in the Region of Waterloo, and I have lived in the City of Waterloo my whole life.

The Riding of Waterloo is currently composed of the City of Waterloo and a portion of the City of Kitchener that is east of Highway 85 and down to Victoria Street. The redistribution proposal (map 8) removes the portion of the City of Kitchener and uses the City of Waterloo city limits as the boundary for the Riding of Waterloo. Since the proposed redistribution keeps the City of Waterloo intact, I can support it. Any decision otherwise would not be received with the same support. Of course, I also support the proposed change to the Riding of Waterloo because I appreciate that the commission is taking many factors into consideration, including average population numbers and communities of identity and interest.

I would also add that the Region of Waterloo consists of three cities (Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo) and four townships (North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot, and Woolwich). The population of the Region, keeping in mind the criteria the commission is to consider, justifies maintaining five ridings within the Region of Waterloo. Considering communities of identity and interest, I believe that keeping the Region of Waterloo intact should be given due consideration.

Finally, I acknowledge I do not live in the City of Cambridge and that Cambridge residents would be best to comment, but I offer some insights as someone who is aware of the history and composition of the city. The City of Cambridge includes the vibrant community of Hespeler. I believe it would be both important and necessary, considering the criteria for redistribution, that Hespeler stay intact.

Thank you for your important work and for allowing citizens to offer our comments. I recognize that there are many critical factors that need to be considered and the individuals that live, work, and breathe in these communities can offer essential insights. The insights that we offer are very valuable and I appreciate that you are taking the time to read and consider them.

Sincerely,

Bardish

Honourable Bardish Chagger, PC, MP

Member of Parliament for the Riding of Waterloo
